Whenever rain is falling, there is a lot of fresh water that just goes to the ground unused. For some homeowners, this has made them think of alternative sources of water. Catching rainwater has been a method for collecting usable water for generations, but to do so in a modern home will require that you take a few more things into consideration than you might have thought.

The first step is to figure out what the water will be used for. If you are just thinking of using it for flushing toilets and watering plants, you might be fine with just a filter straining out any debris from the water, but if you are planning on washing clothes or showering with it, you want to clean it a little more, and if it is meant for drinking, then you definitely want some serious filtration in place.

It is also important to consider the surface off of which you collect the water. If there is lead or bird droppings, these will contaminate the water and might leave it harmful for you even after filtration.
